Applying Scientific Principles within Mechanical Engineering Services


This course is designed to help novice or practising engineers within the refrigeration and air conditioning, heating and ventilating, and building and engineering services industries and gas engineers and installers who wish to raise their awareness of the principles of measurement, energy, heat and power, force, pressure and electricity within mechanical and electrical application processes.

It can be held here (dates to be advised) or on site where companies have suitable facilities and a group of engineers requiring training.


To ensure delegates are conversant with principles and processes within the mechanical engineering services field.

Good for Continual Professional Development (CPD) and career enhancement this course provides an insight into this field which can stand alone or be used as a basis for future training.

There are two options depending on the experience and knowledge of the delegates:

3 day course for experienced engineers
For practising engineers with a minimum of 3 years' experience within a mechanical engineering services' trade this can be taken as a 3 day course.

5 day course for inexperienced engineers
For novice engineers with less than 3 years' experience this can be taken as a 5 day course.


Good quality presentations will be reinforced by discussion sessions, practical work and worked examples.

A full set of course notes will be provided for each delegate.

• State the application and use of SI derived units
• Understand how to calculate relative densities of common materials
• Understand the principle applications of solid materials
• Identify detailed properties of solid materials
• State and understand the principle applications of the properties of liquids
• State and understand the principle applications of the properties of gases
• Identify the properties of gases
• Identify the relationships of Celcius and Kelvinair temperature scales
• Identifiy the terminology with change of state
• Identify the terms latent and sensible heat (liquids/gases)
• Identify the methods of heat transfer
• Identify the units of energy
• Identify and state how to carry out simple heat, energy and power calculations
• Understand simple mechanical principles and their application
• Understand the principles of electricity as they relate to the mecanical services industry (electron flow, units of measurement, purpose of application)
• Electrical calculations
• Earthing requirements
