Introduction
The Practical Refrigeration Training Centre is approved by City and Guilds to assess candidates for the 2078 02 Ammonia Refrigerant Handling and by CITB for their Safe Handling of Andydrous Ammonia schemes.
These have been developed with the Rerigeration Industry Board (RIB)to reflect the standards of BSEN 378 (Safety Aspects in the Design, Construction and Installation of Refrigerating Appliances).
Successful candidates can be entered onto the RIB register of certificated refrigerant handlers. This registration must be renewed every 3 years. The RIB register is recognised by many organisations within the refrigeration industry.
Candidates for the refrigerant handling assessment must demonstrate that they are competent to handle refrigerants, including both charging and recovery. They must also show their awareness of the hazards of using such refrigerants to themselves, to other people and to the environment. No formal qualification needs to be held by the candidate. All underpinning knowledge will be provided by a brief presentation and the comprehensive notes supplied.
Knowledge of the use of a charging manifold and guage lines is implicit. This course is not suitable for inexperienced engineers.
This course is always held on site with access to suitable ammonia plant essential. Up to 6 engineers can be assessed per course. |
Objective
To achieve the City and Guilds 2078 02, Ammonia, or the CITB Safe Handling of Anhydrous Ammonia qualification. |
Methodology
A presentation/discussion session will be followed by one-to-one assessments. Theory will be tested by means of verbal questions (City and Guilds) or a written paper (CITB).
Practical skills will be tested by means of a practical demonstration by the candidate. Candidates must demonstrate that they are competent to handle refrigerants, including both charging and recovery. They must also show their awareness of the hazards of using such refrigerants to themselves, to other people and to the environment.

Synopsis
The major topics covered include:
Use of safety equipment and the implications of safety standards and legislation.
Identification of type, state and condition of refrigerant.
Storage and movement of refrigerant cylinders.
Decanting of refrigerant.
Processing of systems before refrigerant is charged.
Charging liquid and vapour refrigerant into new and existing systems.
Recovery of refrigerant from systems.

Breaking into a system
Purging lines / system
Risk Assessment
Work Permits
Method Statements
Emergency Procedures / Equipment
All the above processes must be carried out with the minimum emission of refrigerant to the atmosphere and without danger to the candidate or others.
